Given Jessica’s rural background, many of the skills she picked up before joining Newton LDP have been applicable in her role as an Apprentice Rural Surveyor. Prior to joining Newton LDP, she gained valuable experience in the rural sector through farm sales, farm audits and lambing. Outside of work, she has recently been appointed Vice Chair of the Stratford and Studley Young Farmers Committee.
National Apprenticeship Week has provided Jessica with the opportunity to reflect on her experiences at Newton LDP, which will hopefully inspire others who are considering the apprenticeship route:
“When I first chose the apprenticeship route, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, other than knowing it would involve balancing on-the-job learning with academic study. Now, almost six months into my Chartered Surveyor (Rural) Degree Apprenticeship, I have embraced the challenge of managing both university and work.”
“The team at Newton LDP has been incredibly supportive, providing me with experience across various aspects of the business while allowing me the flexibility to structure my schedule around work, research, and university assignments. The apprenticeship pathway has given me the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge that directly compliment my studies, allowing me to apply real-life scenarios for a deeper understanding.”
“My apprenticeship involves study weeks at Harper Adams University and I am extremely grateful for the guidance I receive from the course leaders. The study weeks at Harper Adams are a great chance to get involved with student life.”
“As I reflect on the past six months, it’s rewarding to see how much I’ve grown, adapted and changed along with embracing the opportunity given to me to learn and earn.”
“I recognise that there is still so much more to learn, and I look forward to continuing my development, taking on new responsibilities, and expanding my expertise as I progress in my apprenticeship.”
“If you're considering the apprenticeship route, I highly recommend gaining as much work experience as possible and seizing every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t hesitate to reach out to companies; building relationships now can greatly benefit your future career.”
